JKT72042

This resin set consists of 30 Luftwaffe wood ammo boxes. You get 5 copies for each of 6 types as follows:

  • EL.A.Z. electrical impact fuse for free fall bombs.
  • 3cm MK 103 ammo box
  • 13mm MG 103 ammo box
  • 13mm MG 103 ammo box (large 500 round variant)
  • 2cm MG 151/20 ammo box
  • 2cm MG FF "M" ammo box
All the parts exhibit exquisite detail as one has come to expect from JK Resin. I could find no flash as well as no discernible air bubbles. A few of the boxes come with molded on rope handles that look quite realistic. As for the included decals, they are as exquisite as the resin parts. Images are petite and well printed. Each image is printed on a separate piece of carrier film. The scans show how it is possible to make out the individual lettering, though I needed my reading glasses, plus optivisor, plus a strong magnifying glass to see them with my 60 plus year old Mk.I eyeball. It appears that all of the the boxes and decals in this set are modelled after those found on the wehrmachts.kisten.free.fr site, and from which all the dimensions are used in the table below.

  Box  Dimensions

  50x27x23.5    19.7x10.6x9.3    0.27x0.15x0.13    0.34x0.15x0.13

As you can see above, most of the width and height dimensions are close, while most of the lengths are a tad long, though for a few of the boxes the extra length may be caused by their molded on rope handles. In any case, any discrepancies work out to be a few scale inches, which in my mind is not of any major significance.

Conclusion

An excellent set if you are wanting to add some realistic looking ammo boxes to anything Luftwaffe related, be it a diorama with an airplane, a load in a truck, or anything in between.

JKT72043

Though not stated, this is the companion set of decals for the resin ammo & box set JKT72010 as previewed here. Like I said for the JKT72042 set above, these decals are exquisite. Images are petite and well printed. Each image is printed on a separate piece of carrier film. The scans show how it is possible to make out the individual lettering, though I needed my reading glasses, plus optivisor, plus a strong magnifying glass to see them with my 60 plus year old Mk.I eyeball. Once again, it appears that all of the the decal markings in this set are modelled after those found on the wehrmachts.kisten.free.fr site.

Conclusion

An excellent set of decals for those wishing to add that little extra realism to their ammunition boxes.

A quick build review

Having a desire to add a few ammo boxes to some gun builds, I painted and decalled a pair of the MGFF and MG151 boxes, one of each style in field grey and natural wood. The boxes are molded smooth so a light wood grain was scratched onto the surface with the point of a sharp hobby knife. If you look closely you might be able to see it in the pictures below. Painting really brings out the detail on the boxes. The hinges and rope handles are represented very well. There are two things to watch out for during the decaling process.

First, the images are on extremely thin carrier film and the longer images with the ammo type stenciling will try their best to curl up on themselves. Their thinness also makes them susceptible to damage, which isn't too much of an issue. I image that in real life these boxes would have been be handled without too much care, so some damage adds realism to their overall look.

The other concern comes with the rope handles, which interfere with placing the 2cm decals on the end of the boxes. It would be best to undercut the ropes with a saw beforehand. I didn't discover this problem until after I had started my decaling session, so the undercuts damaged the paint forcing me to do some touch ups before continuing.

Other than that, the decals respond well to Microsol and snug down extremely well and the carrier film will disappear after a few applications of setting solution.
